ToggleIf seeing a giant panda in China is on your bucket list, you’re not alone. Every year, hundreds of thousands of travelers plan panda tours specifically to witness these extraordinary animals in person. And the good news? China makes it surprisingly accessible — if you know where to go and how to plan it right.
This guide covers everything you need to know: the best panda bases, the different types of panda tours, how to become a panda keeper for a day, and how to combine your panda experience with China’s most spectacular landscapes.
Giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) exist in the wild in only one country: China. Their natural habitat spans the mountain ranges of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces, where bamboo forests cover steep slopes between 1,200 and 3,500 meters above sea level.
There are fewer than 1,900 giant pandas estimated to exist today — a number that makes every encounter precious. Thanks to decades of conservation efforts by Chinese researchers and international partners, the species was reclassified from “Endangered” to “Vulnerable” in 2016, a milestone of modern wildlife conservation.
Sichuan Province — and its capital Chengdu — is the undisputed panda capital of the world. This is where the highest concentration of panda research bases, breeding centers, and sanctuaries exists, making it the starting point for any serious panda tour.
Not all panda tours are created equal. Depending on your time, budget, and what kind of experience you’re looking for, here are the three main options:
The most accessible option. You visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, observe pandas in large naturalistic enclosures, and learn about conservation science. Best for travelers on a tight schedule or those combining pandas with other Chengdu highlights.
The most popular choice. You dedicate part of your trip to pandas and the rest to Chengdu’s food scene, ancient temples, UNESCO heritage sites, or the surreal landscapes of places like Jiuzhaigou Valley. This gives you the full Sichuan experience without sacrificing the panda encounter.
The deepest, most meaningful panda experience available to the public. You work alongside real panda keepers at the Dujiangyan Panda Base — preparing food, cleaning enclosures, learning about daily care routines. You leave with a Panda Volunteer Certificate, a panda-printed t-shirt, and a story you’ll tell for the rest of your life.
The most visited panda facility in the world. Located just 10 km from central Chengdu, this 92-hectare research center is home to dozens of giant pandas across all age groups — from tiny pink newborns in the nursery to massive adults lounging in bamboo forests.
Best time to visit: Early morning (8–10 AM) when pandas are most active and feeding.
What to see: Giant panda enclosures, red panda area, nursery viewing (seasonal), conservation museum.
Smaller, less crowded, and home to approximately 40 giant pandas plus 5 red pandas. This is the only base in the Chengdu region that offers a public panda volunteer program — one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences in Asia.
Why it’s special: More intimate than the Chengdu base. You can observe feeding sessions up close and, through the volunteer program, actually participate in panda care.
Situated in a lush valley, this base is part of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. It’s larger and more remote, attracting visitors who want a quieter encounter away from big tour groups.
One of China’s oldest and most important panda sanctuaries, located in the mountains northwest of Chengdu. Less accessible but rewarding for serious wildlife enthusiasts. The surrounding mountain scenery is breathtaking.
At YellowBird Tour, we operate small-group and private panda tours with local guides who have spent years in Sichuan. No call centers, no middlemen — just real people who know this region deeply. Here are our three panda tour options:

Giant pandas are visible year-round in research bases and sanctuaries. However, some seasons offer noticeably better experiences:
🌸 Spring (March–May): Ideal weather, beautiful bamboo greenery, pandas are active outdoors. One of the most popular times to visit.
☀️ Summer (June–August): Peak tourist season. More visitors at the panda base, but pandas may retreat to cooler indoor areas during the hottest days. Book well in advance.
🍂 Autumn (September–November): Arguably the best season. Cooler temperatures keep pandas active longer. Beautiful foliage in Jiuzhaigou Valley (October is peak color season).
❄️ Winter (December–February): Surprisingly good for panda tours. Fewer crowds, crisp air, and pandas tend to be particularly active in cooler weather. Great for photography.
Pro tip: Whatever the season, arrive at the panda base when it opens — typically around 7:30–8:00 AM. Pandas are fed in the morning and are most active during the first two hours. By midday, most are napping (enthusiastically).
1. Book the volunteer program early. Spots are strictly limited. The Dujiangyan volunteer program accepts only a small number of participants per day — this is one tour you don’t leave until the last minute.
2. Wear dark, muted clothing. Bright colors can startle animals. Earth tones and dark shades are recommended, especially for the volunteer program.
3. Don’t bring food into panda areas. The bases have strict rules about what can enter animal zones. Your lunch is provided in the volunteer program.
4. Respect the no-touch policy. In most facilities, direct contact with giant pandas is no longer permitted. This policy exists to protect the animals’ health and welfare — and it’s a good thing.
5. Combine with Chengdu’s food scene. You’re in Sichuan — the culinary capital of China. Mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, and Chengdu hot pot deserve at least one dedicated evening. Your local YellowBird guide will know exactly where to go.
6. Factor in travel time to Dujiangyan. The Dujiangyan Panda Base is approximately 1.5 hours from central Chengdu. Our tours include roundtrip private transfers, so you don’t need to figure out transport.
Can I hold a giant panda?
Direct contact and holding of giant pandas has been phased out at most Chinese facilities due to animal welfare and health concerns. The experiences available today — including the volunteer program — are designed to offer meaningful interaction without compromising panda wellbeing.
Do I need special permits for the volunteer program?
Yes — the program requires registration and a contribution fee, which are included in YellowBird Tour’s 1-Day Panda Volunteer package. We handle all paperwork so you can focus on the pandas.
Is the Chengdu Panda Base suitable for children?
Absolutely. The panda base is family-friendly and one of the most popular family activities in all of China. Children are typically delighted by the pandas — especially the cubs in the nursery area.
What language is used at the bases?
Most signage is bilingual (Chinese and English). YellowBird Tour provides an English-speaking local coordinator for all panda tours.
Can I combine a panda tour with a trip to Tibet?
Yes — Chengdu is a major gateway to Tibet. Many travelers combine a panda experience in Chengdu with a Tibet tour. Ask us about multi-destination itineraries.
